Last week was Chat #372 “How To Respond to Unhelpful Thoughts”

Why do those little voices in our heads sound so loud sometimes?

You know what I’m talking about! That little voice that decides to skip “inside voice” and go straight to “banshee scream” when you have a little trip up. I don’t know about you but my little voice never whispers “hey, you ate more chips than we planned”…instead it’s screaming “hey dummy, check out that empty chip bag you left over there! You are so stupid and they are going to kick you out of WW if you don’t get a grip on yourself” so loud sometimes I think other people can hear it.

Pro tips for talking back to yourself:

See it for what it is

When you hear that voice starting to rev up, take a breath and recognize that’s all it is. No one called you to yell at you about the chip bag. None of your friends are going to stop hanging out with you. It’s your little voice, and it needs to know we’re onto it

Reality Check

Next, put that little voice in its place by asking it two questions:

“Hey little voice….”

  1. Where are the facts to back up what you just said to me?
  2. Would you say that to one of our friends?

Release Your Inner Critic

During the Release Your Inner Critic Walk Talk, clinical psychologist Dr. Shefali chats with Canadian WW Coach Jake about how to push past your inner critic and reimagine who you want to be. It’s only 28 minutes and you can walk along or just listen along, it’s up to you!

Your homework was #LittleVoiceCheck. I know you thought of something your little voice said to hurt your feelings this week (maybe even today!)  Tell us what that was and answer the two questions: 1) what are the facts to back it up, 2) would your actual voice say that to a friend?

  • When the little voice in Sherry’s head says “do you really want to do this forever?” she plugs her ears and says naaaaaaaaaaa and shuts that voice up! And she says she would NEVER say that to a friend!
  • Lynn’s pesky little voice tries to tell her she’s not good enough. Hey. Lynn’s little voice. NOT TRUE! Lynn is an amazing survivor and is now a huge support system for her son. She’s MORE than enough!
  • Ann’s little voice is so pesky chit chatty it’s exhausting. I’ve seen her smile on  Tuesday nights. I’ve heard her get excited about Zumba, pumping up her friends, doing squats like there’s no tomorrow. The pesky voice needs to hush now!

Bravo, you did it!

This Week’s Topic: “3 Questions to Ask Yourself to Stay On Track!”

Have you ever been sitting at a drive thru or restaurant knowing exactly what you’re going to order. You’ve planned it before you pulled up or sat down. And then it happens. You hear a voice whispering “the french fries are hot and extra salty today”

It’s those pesky voices again! But here are some healthy questions you can ask yourself again this week..

Three Pro Tip questions to ask yourself:

What Are My Thoughts RIGHT NOW?

When you hear that negativity STOP and listen. What are your thoughts really telling you in that moment. In the hot french fry moment I mentioned we all knew “hot and extra salty” comment wasn’t real because I mean fast food, there’s nothing hot and extra salty about it anymore. The reality was those thoughts were more likely “everybody else gets fries, why do I have to eat that stinky salad I already tracked?”

How do those thoughts make me feel, really feel. And how does that impact my journey?

In the fry scenario the thought made me feel weak, like a loser, like “well here we go again”. And we all know that leads to a pity party which in my case leads to a “might as well go get more cold, soggy not extra salt fries.”

Now, how can I shift this story?

Life happens, but you don’t have to let it happen TO you. To shift this story I could do any number of things:

  • Get the fries and count them, then move on
  • Get the fries and if they aren’t as hot and extra salty as advertised by my brain I could throw them away
  • Remember that I have fries in my freezer and go home and make them in the air fryer so they are SUPER HOT and as salty as I want

This Week’s Homework: #ShiftThatStory

Your homework for this week is #ShiftThatStory. I know you’ve been there, I know you’ve done that. I know you know what I’m talking about. Pick your “fry scenario” and tell us how you are going to SHIFT THAT STORY!    Now DO YOUR HOMEWORK because I promise there is someone who needs the idea you have already rattling around in your head. Whatever it is let us know, I promise your decision to participate this week will help you AND someone else!  Then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Don’t forget to do your homework #ShiftThatStory and tag me when you share on social media!

Extra Credit: Zucchini Salsa!

We were a little late getting our raised bed garden started, so we are FINALLY starting to be able to harvest our veggies!

The five notes I’ve learned from the garden:

  1. You don’t need to plant mint in the ground. Learned the hard way, now I know.
  2. I killed my cilantro. This is the fifth time I’ve tried, but for whatever reason I cannot seem to keep cilantro healthy and alive.
  3. Peppers are apparently perennials! Did you know that??? I successfully harvested a few peppers, and I now know that they need to be treated like a perennial flower.
  4. I am the master garden of tomatoes. My Roma tomatoes are GIGANTIC. I also have big success with zucchini, squash, and cucumbers.
  5. I planted my “second harvest” full of eggplants, okra, and more cucumbers… I’ll let you know what happens!

So, with all of my zucchini and tomatoes, we will be making SALSA! We will be trying it out tomorrow for dinner with some taco salads that Casey will be making. We are trying to find family meals that we can include Allan in now that he has started a more low carb diet to keep the diabetes at bay. I’m hoping that sneaking all of these veggies into a yummy salsa will help encourage him to eat better and will be so good that we all enjoy!

I have the recipe posted, just click this link to make your own!

This salsa… is SO GOOD!! I cannot wait to try it out in our taco salads tomorrow night.
