It’s pretty obvious my siblings and I are children of the 70’s. We watch retro tv like its the first time Gilligan was on the island. Bell bottom jeans still hold a special place in our hearts. I like running my toes through orange shag carpet. And if someone says pork chops….my mind immediately chimes back in with “and applesauce”.
In a 1971 episode of the Brady Bunch middle son Peter Brady is trying out new personalities. While Alice and Mrs Brady are preparing dinner, Peter decides to test out Humphrey Bogart. True to Bogart form, Peter saunters into the kitchen and confidently asks what the ladies are making for dinner. Mrs Brady looks at him quizzically and says “pork chops”. Peter curls his upper lip and replies “pork chops huh?” He turns to Alice and she replies “and applesauce”. “Pork chops and applesauce. We’ll isn’t that swell”.
I think pork chops and applesauce are swell. And even more swell with a little german twist. I think even Alice would approve.
I put this little treasure in before I left for work Tuesday morning. We live in a loft now so I had an entire hallway to enjoy the aroma coming from our humble abode. Surprisingly none of the neighbors were waiting to find out what was cooking, but hubby was at the door…ready…and waiting.
When we moved downtown hubby and I reached an agreement that we would eat out once a week and once a week only. One reason was monetary but also for my weight watching sanity. Too many meals out leaves me not much in control. With an unlimited number of choices and cuisines it didn’t take long for our evenings out to sneak up to two on occasion. Then one evening out and breakfast at a little diner called Pete’s every other Saturday morning. Suddenly it was two evenings out plus Pete’s. The madness had to stop.
Back to the yummy smell in the hallway. I had been home less than 15 minutes when with plate in hand John was ready and waiting for dinner to be served. One bite later and words to my ears “this is delicious”. A few tastes later “how much did this cost?” As he was almost licking the remaining juices off the plate hubby turned and said “can we have that instead of eating out one night a week?” Winner, winner, pork chop dinner.
