Last week during Chat #274: How To Build Healthy Habits that Stick, we realized there are just under 30 weeks before Christmas…do you know how many new habits we can make AND stick between now and then?
The best advice I can give you for sticking with new habits is to DO something and not NOT do something. Let’s see how!
Myth: The only way I can break a habit I think is “bad” is to just stop doing it
FACT: You are a human. Humans are not perfect. Trying to “not” do something often creates turmoil inside us that actually makes you think about the undesirable habit more. Example: if I say “I want to stop sitting on the couch eating snacks at night” I will start thinking about what snacks I want to eat while I’m sitting on the couch tonight (who’s with me?). If instead I say “I want to create a new habit of sipping flavored hot teas while I watch tv at night so I can start winding down” I am much more likely to do it
Myth: I can’t keep a new habit going because I’m (fill in the blank)
FACT: Usually not being able to start and keep a new habit is because it’s either not clear what you wanted to do or it was too big to start with. Tips for success:
- Write it down on a post it note and put it somewhere you can see it
- Use the STAR goal method
- Decide if the habit is short term or long term
- Ask someone who knows you if it’s easy to understand/do or if you need to break it down into a smaller habit
- Don’t be afraid to adjust it if necessary
Myth: No one but me can make me stick to my new habit
FACT: Ummmm hello? Are you new to the group? This is the BEST PLACE to get help with accountability for a new habit and you may just have someone who wants to join you!
Your homework for last week was #TheStickyHabitsClub
Your homework for this week was #TheStickyHabitsClub. You can ALL do this one, and you can do it together. Pick one habit you want to start that you know would be better/easier with a buddy (maybe it’s making a grocery list and sticking with it, getting off the couch for a 5K, maybe a confidant to share how many points you use each day?)….and then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!
Let’s see how you did!
- Sherry is tossing her family’s “science projects” from the fridge LOL and planned the week ahead to include leftovers, WW and “Kelly approved” recipes. She’s going to use sticky notes to keep her in the sticky habits club!
- Mary Ann got her boot off this week (remember the broken foot last week?) and is going to ease her way back into walking and aerobics. Her sticky habit buddies will be making sure she’s not overdoing it I hope!
- Cynthia’s sticky habit is to get in more veggies…this morning she even made a new recipe Balsamic Glazed Roasted Broccoli Spears….now we can all help her remember to make that one more often!
Bravo, you did it!
This Week’s Topic: Anchors – How To Find Your Why
We all have different reasons for starting (and staying) on this journey but have you put yours in words?
And if you’ve put your Why to pen and paper has it changed over time? Here’s how to use that “anchor” to keep you headed towards your goal!
Don’t think about it, just say your why out loud
I don’t care where you are, who’s around or who can hear you. Just declare the reason you joined WW out loud no matter what it is
Close your eyes and see it
Now close your eyes (unless you’re driving) and see your why. What does it look like when you get there? Or if you are already at goal weight does it look like what you thought it would?
Now own it, but don’t be afraid to change it
Your “why” is YOUR WHY…not anyone else’s so I want you to own it. But if your why changes (maybe you reached another goal, maybe circumstances changed) don’t be afraid to do this exercise again and make sure you know and remember WHY
This Week’s Homework: #AnchorYourWhy
Your homework for this week is #AnchorYourWhy. I truly believe you can manifest positive things (“anchor them”) by writing them down, pen to paper, and then putting them where you can see them. It doesn’t have to be where anyone else can see, this is just for you. I want to you take a sticky note, index card, popsicle stick, I don’t care what it is and write the WHY you just imagined and put it somewhere you can see it….and then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!
Don’t forget to do your homework #AnchorYourWhy and tag me when you share on social media!

Eggstra Credit: Peach Freezer Jam & Peach Salsa
We talked in the first half of our chat about our “why” behind our WW goals and for me, it’s my granddaughters. I want to share delicious real foods with them and help to teach them healthy habits, so tonight we’re going to make a few recipes that I’m preparing to share with them.
If you were with us last week, you know that I have a ton of fresh peaches on my hands and we’re going to keep making exciting new recipes with those tonight. I’ve purchased a pressure canner which I’ve enjoyed using and tonight we’re going to be making Peach Freezer Jam and Peach Salsa!
Pro Tip: To make small portions of your freezer jam that can be thawed individually, use Souper Cubes to freeze your jam in single servings instead of having to thaw a full jar.
