WW News and Reviews May 2022

  • You may have already known this one, but it has been brought to my attention that all oats are gluten free.  I know I should have realized this since they are “oats” instead of wheat but hey…I can’t know everything right?  BUT, I have also been told that if you are truly gluten intolerant to seek out “certified gluten free” oats because it could make a difference!
  • For those of you looking for a “feels like I’m there” virtual workshop I want to remind you that Gwen still hosts one on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm EST. I can’t share the link because you do have to be a current WW member to access this meeting. For more info go to your WW app and Connect → search for the W Knoxville Group and all of the info is there!
  • If you happen to be in or near Knoxville I am super pumped to announce on Saturday, May 28th The Peach Tent will be set up in our parking lot from 10am until 1pm! These are fresh South Carolina peaches and it is a one day only event. For more info visit: https://www.facebook.com/events/730746684623286

The month’s theme is “Myth Busting” and we will spend the entire month discussing some food, weight loss and other myths and busting them!

Last week during Chat #272: How To Be Kinder To Yourself, we recognized times when we have had a setback (even a small one) and found ourselves playing the internal blame game. Why did I do that? How did this happen again? What were you thinking?

Sound familiar?

Now imagine the same situation if it happened to a friend – What would you have said to him or her?

Myth: I have to be tough on myself to achieve my goals

FACT: Tough love doesn’t work! A healthy amount of self compassion does!

Myth: If I tell myself it’s “ok” I will just keep repeating the same behavior

Forgiving yourself and showing a little compassion does not equal throwing caution to the wind for an indefinite amount of time. Decide now that when setbacks happen (and they will) that you will get back in control at the next meal, or at the latest the next day

Myth: If I keep stumbling over the same things every time I must be (fill in the blank)

On the contrary! If you are stumbling along the same paths more often than you’d like, maybe you just need to visit different paths! As an example, if going to your grocer in the morning while they are baking bread creates a situation where you either buy the bread (or eat everything else in your path trying to avoid the bread) maybe you need to change your shopping time to the afternoon. Or try a grocery pick up service and avoid those impromptu shopping decisions all together!

Your homework for last week was  #ThePositivePathClub. Think of a situation that always seems to trip you up…the break room at work, not packing a lunch, talking to someone who upsets you…and tell us a different “path” you could take to avoid that stumble and keep your positive attitude intact! Let us know what you picked ….and then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Let’s see how you did!

  • Deanna has been part of the positive path club since I met her. She plan, plan, plans and even had a plan for making a lower point beverage at the races this weekend because she kept a good attitude and did some research before they even left!
  • Katy earns her admittance into the positive path club this week too! She works 60+ hours per week which can make it difficult to plan meals and stay on track, but this week she planned a grocery pickup on the way to work to ensure she had healthy, exciting options at the ready.
  • Even though they “technically” didn’t do their homework…I think we should welcome Karen H and Lynn C as charter members of the positive path club. Somehow every single day they manage to come up with a positive thought, a beautiful welcome to the morning, and something that well darn it just puts me on a positive path each and every day!

Bravo, you did it!

This Week’s Topic: How to Squeeze More Movement Into Your Day

If I ask “did you get in some exercise today” what would you say?

Many people might immediately answer no if they didn’t exercise in the traditional sense of the word. However, we got lots of responses by members of the chat saying that they spent time gardening, jumped rope, parked further away from the grocery store doors, and more.

How about if I asked:

  • Did you walk your dog today?
  • Did you play with your child / grandchild today?
  • Did you dig in your flower bed / garden today?

And then asked “did you get in some exercise today,” now what would you say?

Myth: If you don’t exert yourself for at least 30 minutes at a time you might as well not even bother

FACT: While it is good to get in 30 plus minutes per day of movement, just fitting in multiple small amounts of moving (like dancing while you clean or hula hooping during commercials) counts as moving

Myth: It doesn’t count if you don’t sweat

FACT:  According to Healthline.com you in fact are not burning more calories just because you are sweating during a “workout” and if or how much you sweat is actually more due to other conditions like:

  • how hard you work out
  • weather conditions
  • genetics
  • your fitness level
  • health conditions
  • where you exercise

Myth: Office jobs are sedentary

FACT:  Many of them are only sedentary if you let them be! Two cases in point:

  • #1 Gwen has a member of another group who thought her desk job was sedentary and she wasn’t getting any steps in all day. After she wore a fitness device for a few weeks she found out she was getting MOST of her steps at her very non-sedentary job and it was after she got home that she was sitting!
  • #2 I own a business that keeps me “tied” to a very small space in our building. I was getting frustrated with my “during the day” steps until I made a few changes: now I come up front to get each client, I walk them to both rooms and back, and I take each project upstairs to our back office as I complete them…that’s added almost 2,000 steps a day!

This Week’s Homework: #TheJustGetUpClub

Your homework for this week is #TheJustGetUpClub. You can ALL do this one, and honestly I expect to hear from all 13,000 of you. Ok, not really but this one is soooooo easy. To be in the just get up club you only have to add ONE MOVE ONE DAY this week. You could take mail to a co-worker, change the channel with your finger instead of the remote (that is, if you can even find that button on your tv LOL), or dance with a toddler during the end credits to Tangled, literally anything!….and then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Don’t forget to do your homework #TheJustGetUpClub and tag me when you share on social media!

Extra Credit: Strawberry Compote Showdown!

If you didn’t already know, I’ve been overrun with strawberries from my garden over the last few weeks so I’ve been looking for exciting new things to make with them. During last week’s eggstra credit we looked at a variety of methods to preserve them and a few recipe ideas. We’re going to continue that today with a strawberry compote showdown!

I’m going to start with a recipe that Debbi C suggested to me for her fruit compote. We’re making it with our strawberries, but she typically  uses blueberries with this recipe and serves it over oatmeal banana bread single serve loaves.

We had another member who preferred to remain anonymous share a microwave strawberry compote recipe!

So, how do they compare?

  • The stovetop compote definitely came out thicker than the microwave recipe
  • The microwave option is definitely quicker to make and smells just as good, however it did make a bit of a mess in the microwave

In my opinion, the stovetop version is already the preliminary winner, but we’ll be taste-testing these on Tuesday to determine the true winner! Check back after Tuesday for recipes and results!
