Last week during Chat #234:Three Good Things we realized that a lot of things come in sets of 3’s.

Whether you study the Bible, dabble in numerology, or are just a noticer of patterns you have undoubtedly run into significant things that come in 3’s.

  • The Bible has over 467 references to the number 3 including – Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
  • A day has three parts – Morning, Noon, and Night
  • There are three primary colors – red, blue and yellow
  • Luck comes in threes – Third Time’s The Charm!
  • Even summoning the undead – Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetle…..

So why choose 3 Good Things to focus on every single day?

  • Easy: Just thinking of one good thing doesn’t really seem like it’s important enough to do does it? And 5 well…I’d forget what I was supposed to be doing before I got past 4. Nope, 3 seems like just enough.
  • Effective: Taking time to think of three good things (especially if you write them down!) can be an effective way to shift your mindset. And happy people make better decisions!
  • Everyone: No matter what’s going on everyone can find three things to be grateful for.  Mother has a meltdown at the facility where she lives? Be grateful the right person has your phone number and cares enough to call you. Granddaughter has a bad accident on the way to church? Give thanks that the entire congregation knew about it immediately and could send up prayers for the EMT’s and for her injuries. Chose the wrong laptop on Amazon? Be thankful and amazed that Kohl’s is now a drop off point and you don’t have to figure out how to return it.

See how this works? And see what I did there? I still made it about threes 🙂

Your homework for this week was #3GoodThings. While I wish you would do it every day, for your homework you just need to pick one day this week and write down three good things….and then type it, snap it, however you want to share it and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Let’s see how you did!

  • Stacey enjoyed not one but two visits with friends this week, went on a walk with her hubby four times as a “date”, and canned some homemade salsa using tomatoes from her garden!
  • Jeanne says the weather has been cooler, she took a long walk before work, AND she made plans to visit with her cousin that she hasn’t seen in 15 years!
  • Lynn has found three good things EVERY DAY THIS WEEK! Some were so simple that most of us overlook them like waking up to the sound of rain, waking up with a song in her heart, and having a day to relax and read!

Bravo, you did it!

This Week’s Topic: Reality Check!

Raise your hand if you’ve ever eaten too much. That’s all of us, right?

Now raise your hand if after you overate you pushed away from the table, said “whew, well that was good but I ate too much”, and then went on about your day. I’m guessing not many hands went up that time.

Naturally skinny people (civilians) eat too much too. You know what’s different? They are wired to somehow just accept it as fact, it never crosses their minds to beat themselves up over it, and they can carry on as if nothing really happened. That doesn’t make the rest of us broken, we just need to stop and do a reality check!

You are human, things are gonna happen! Let’s say you were at a party and everyone else was having cake. You decided not to have any but when you got home you felt (_____) and ate an entire box of (____)

  • You tell yourself: Everyone else got to have cake, I never get to have cake. And because I never get to have cake I always make stupid decisions like eating a box of (_____)
  • Reality Check: Is it true that you NEVER get to have cake? Do you always make stupid decisions?
  • Smart Talk: I’m not stupid. I tracked every other day this week and simply could have made a better decision. Next time I know the party will have cake I’ll save some Smart Points and plan ahead to be able to enjoy a slice!

Not good at talking to yourself like this? Do a Friend Check instead! Call a friend and tell him or her what happened…because you know they are going to say the same thing!

This Week’s Homework: #FriendCheck

Your homework for this week is #FriendCheck. Think of a time a friend told you they messed up and then what you said. Write that down (or post is as your homework) to do your own #FriendCheck the next time you need it!….and then type it, snap it, however you want to share it and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Don’t forget to do your homework #FriendCheck and tag me when you share on social media!

Extra Credit: Egg Lady Labs – Fat Free Cream Cheese!

This is the third week that we’ve been back to in-person workshops in my area and everyone’s been asking how I’m doing. Well here’s your update – two weeks in a row I’ve lost exactly 2.4 lbs! During the last week I’ve been focusing on two things that would help me get back on track – mindful eating and purposeful tracking.

Since I’ve been trying to eat mindfully I’ve had a lot of string cheese, fruit, premade salads, yogurt, and other quick and easy low-point foods that don’t take a ton of preparation time.

In the very busy coming week I’ll be focusing on some new goals – my “two on, one off” plan that I use when we take Disney vacations where I eat two of my meals on plan and allow myself one meal off plan. Then I’ll be integrating regular walks with my best friend and walking partner, Karen, into my schedule.

To help with my meal planning, I’ve been working on a new experiment – making my own fat-free cream cheese!

Many of us struggle to find fat-free cream cheese in our grocery stores so we’re stuck either leaving it out in recipes or adjusting up the points to accommodate regular cream cheese.

Two weeks ago I started this experiment, tasted it by itself, and then used it to make Windstar Karen’s Buffalo Chicken Dip, Cheesecake Fruit Dip, and Everything But Tha Bagel Cream Cheese.

You’ll need:

  • Cheesecloth (Carol Lou used coffee filters and Lesley has been making her own for years using paper towels!)
  • Colander
  • Large Bowl (same size or slightly smaller than the colander)

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup nonfat plain greek yogurt to start (once you get the hang of this or for times you need more just add more!)

Instructions:

  1. Nest the colander in the bowl
  2. Fold the cheesecloth and place it in the bottom of the colander
  3. Add yogurt on top of the cheesecloth
  4. Cover with a plate (or other covering)
  5. Refrigerate for 24 hours

As a bonus, we’re making something new with our homemade cream cheese as well tonight – Whipped Peanut Butter Cream Cheese (recipe coming soon)!
